6 ideas to celebrate Earth Day 2020

This year we celebrate the 50th Earth Day

Drums and fanfares – we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! Since 1970, more than 193 partner countries of the Earth Day Network, have been celebrating Mother Nature on  April 22.

The first Earth Day in 1970 launched a wave of action for a better future. The Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts were created in response to the first Earth Day in 1970, as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

‘Earth Day continues to hold major international significance: In 2016, the United Nations chose Earth Day as the day when the historic Paris Agreement on climate change was signed into force.’

This year’s theme is CLIMATE CHANGE. ‘Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.’

We need a change but not in the climate

You may think it’s hard to act from home, but there is always something we can do to show our support towards a better future and a healthier planet.

We need a change, but not in the climate. We need to change our mindset an believe that even a small act can contribute to a greener future. Here at PALANTA we have collected 6 ideas for you, to celebrate Earth Day from your couch.

Fashion and Climate change

Fashion Revolution Week is organized from 20th-26th April 2020. What does fashion do with climate change?

We are living in a climate emergency and the fashion & textiles sector is one of the most polluting and wasteful industries. The industry continues to lack transparency, with widespread exploitation of people working in the supply chain. Never before have there been this many people on the planet in slavery, and fashion is a key driver of this reality.

Brands and retailers are still not taking enough responsibility for the pay and working conditions in their factories, the environmental impacts of the materials they use or how the products they make affect the health of people, animals and our living planet.

6 ideas to celebrate Earth Day 2020

1. Send an email to a brand

Send an email to a brand and ask #WhoMadeYourClothes . You can send this email instantly from Fashion Revolution’s website.

Dear [brand],

I am your customer, and I love your style.

However, I am very worried about the impact that the coronavirus is having on the people working in your supply chain.

Bloomberg News reports that major fashion brands have cancelled orders worth roughly $1.5 billion across more than 1,000 garment factories in Bangladesh since the start of the outbreak. Elsewhere there are reports of fashion brands cancelling orders and stopping payments for orders already placed. What effect is this having on garment makers who are already paid so little and have no social safety net to fall back on?

I understand that this is causing an unprecedented economic crisis and that people like me may be buying fewer clothes right now. But, now is not that time to turn your back on your suppliers and their workers.

So, please tell me #WhoMadeMyClothes and what you are doing to honour existing contracts and ensure that the people working in your supply chain are protected and compensated throughout this crisis?

Sincerely,

2. Buy local

Now, this is more relatable than ever. Due to the corona crisis local restaurants, bars, shops are closed or only open for take-away. We can support them by purchasing giftcards from them which we can use up later, when everything is back in normal.  Buy from your local farmer, florist and coffee roaster. #SupportYourLocals

Leaving our home for a grocery shopping, have never been more refreshing. Leaving my home to pick up a vegan lasagne from a local restaurant or a tulip brunch from our local farmer was even better feeling. I felt that people can unite for a good cause.

3. Join the social conversations

Follow #EarthDay hashtag on socail media and join the conversation. Share your idea and comment on others. At PALANTA we encourage people to share their struggles and ideas about green living. Together we can do more!

4. Go out for a walk

Different times require different approaches. However, on the 50th Earth Day we cannot go our for a walk to admire mother nature, we can bring it in our apartments.

Plant house plants to filter the air and open the windows, enjoy the sunshine or rain, be grateful for both.

5. Meatless Mondays

We are cooking at home a lot nowadays. Let’s try something new! Meatless Monday, weekday vegan. Just start experimenting with some delicious plant based meals. Start with one meal and then add another and another.

6. Clean out your wardrobe

During quarantine times we spend more time at home, well all the time to be precise. Why not clean and organize?
